Outages disrupt power in Placer, Nevada foothill communities along I-80 corridor

Power outage

A string of early morning power outages has interrupted electricity to foothill communities along the Interstate 80 corridor in Placer and Nevada counties.

Upward of 9,000 Pacific Gas & Electric customers, many in the communities of Alta, Colfax, Foresthill and Weimar, lost service beginning 7:50 a.m. Friday, PG&E outage data showed.

An outage on a transmission line that delivers power to substations in that area caused the failures, said PG&E officials.

In Foresthill, where 2,619 customers lost power due to the 7:50 a.m. transmission line outage, power was restored at 9:29 a.m.

In Weimar, 2,147 customers lost power at 7:50 a.m. Crews reset a fuse at the Weimar substation and all power was restored at 9:45 a.m., said Paul Moreno, a PG&E spokesperson.

The largest of the outages was in Colfax where 2,677 homes and businesses were affected. As of approximately 11 a.m., 1,776 customers remained without power, with electricity expected to be restored about 2:30 p.m. Crews were on scene patrolling ofr a cause, Moreno said.

About 805 ratepayers were without electricity in the Dutch Flat/Alta area. Power was expected to be restored at 2 p.m. or later in those communities, Moreno said, with troubleshooters en route.

PG&E crews are also working to restore power to 181 customers in Somerset, El Dorado County, where a vehicle struck a utility pole on Grizzly Flat Road near Moody Road about 3:20 a.m. Friday, Moreno said.

Power to most affected customers has been restored, he said, but crews are completing repairs estimating power should be fully restored at 3 p.m.

More than 460 customers in Penn Valley, in Nevada County, have been without power since just after 7:30 p.m. Thursday, according to the utility. Service was expected to be restored there at noon.
