A sergeant with the Sutter County Sheriff’s Office helped deliver a baby Saturday morning.

Dispatchers in Sutter County received a 911 call around 10:15 a.m. from a residence on Third Street in Meridian from a mother actively going through labor, the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

Sgt. Jeff Kohler, who was patrolling in the area, responded to the scene to find the mother on the phone with Yuba City Police Department dispatchers, who were giving her emergency medical instructions.

“With guidance from dispatch, Sergeant Kohler assisted the mother through the birthing process, and the baby was successfully delivered shortly after his arrival,” sheriff’s officials wrote. The Sheriff’s Office in a social media post said the baby was born at 10:31 a.m.

Medical personnel then arrived and transported the mother and newborn baby to Adventist Health and Rideout in Marysville. Both were healthy, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Meridian is a rural census-designated place along Highway 20, west of Yuba City, with a population of about 300.
