Students at William Lee College Prep were sent home early Thursday after a gas leak was reported at a nearby construction site in Sacramento’s Central Oak Park neighborhood.

Contractors working on a sewer project on the 4600 block of 10th Avenue at Stockton Boulevard reported hearing a hissing sound coming from a 2-inch gas line, according to authorities. Fire crews responded to the scene shortly after 9 a.m.

The incident prompted school officials to notify parents and dismiss students for the day as a precaution, said a representative for Fortune School, which operates the campus.

A Pacific Gas and Electric Co. crew was dispatched to the construction site to cap the leak. A PG&E spokesperson said that the plastic line had been severed by construction crews using a backhoe.

No injuries or evacuations beyond the school were reported.
