Roadway fatality

A 91-year-old woman died Saturday after her car was broadsided while she attempted an illegal U-turn in Elk Grove, police said.

The collision happened around 2:50 p.m. at Bond Road and Salmon Creek Drive, according to an Elk Grove Police Department statement. The woman was driving a Lincoln Town Car northbound on Salmon Creek Drive when she tried to make a U-turn in front of a fire station, police said.

At the same time, a Toyota Rav4 was traveling eastbound on Bond Road and struck the Lincoln on the driver’s side, police said.

Both drivers were taken to hospitals. The woman later died from her injuries; the Rav4 driver, who was not identified, suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening, police said.

The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office was expected to identify the motorist once next of kin are notified.

Police are asking anyone with information about the crash to contact the Elk Grove Police Department’s traffic bureau at 916-478-8143.
