Sacramento writers, groups celebrated at Greater Sacramento Literary Awards
Seven Sacramento writers and organizations will be honored for their contribution to the written word at the California Writers Club Sacramento’s Greater Sacramento Literary Awards in Fair Oaks.
Among the honorees at the Oct. 18 ceremony at North Ridge Country Club, 7600 Madison Ave.: journalist, educator and Sacramento State journalism professor Jan Haag; trailblazing television journalist, former Sacramento Bee opinion editor and playwright Ginger Rutland; Sacramento creative writing and literacy nonprofit 916 Ink; the Sacramento arts education organization Capital Storytelling; Sacramento Poetry Center; Sacramento Press Club; and the literary arts magazine Under the Gum Tree.
California Writers Club Sacramento, with the event’s theme, “100 Years of Writing Excellence in Sacramento,” will gather writers, reporters, filmmakers and historians to learn about writing and publishing in the early years of the capital city and celebrate present-day writers and their projects.
Jack Ohman, who won the Pulitzer Prize for editorial cartooning with The Sacramento Bee in 2016, will be the keynote speaker at the noon ceremony. Kiyo Sato, 102, winner of the William Saroyan Prize for nonfiction, is also scheduled to attend.
The centerpiece of the club’s centennial celebration, the event, is a “gift to the community for its receptiveness to writers over a century,” said organizers. The awards, in the club’s words, “recognize community achievement to advance, promote, and honor literacy in the greater Sacramento area.”
Awardees were selected by a panel representing the region’s literary arts, journalism and historical research communities.
