Looking for the best Latin American food in the Sacramento area?

National Hispanic Heritage Month may be coming to a close, but there are still plenty of chances to find authentic, affordable food in and around Sacramento — from Salvadoran-style pupusas to Puerto Rican mofongo.

According to popular review website Yelp, a few Sacramento-area restaurants in particular ranked high in terms of cuisine and customer service.

Here are five of the top-rated local Latin American eateries, according to Yelp:

Where can I get Salvadorean food in Sacramento area?

Pupusa Central, 3408 Northgate Blvd., Suite 1, in Sacramento, specializes in affordable, authentic Salvadoran fare.

In addition to its signature pupusas — warm, thick cornmeal griddle cakes stuffed with beans and cheese — the restaurant serves up corn tamales, red silk beans and sandwiches such as pastelitos de carne.

The Pupusa Central also offers a variety of traditional Mexican dishes including tacos, burritos and quesadillas.

There’s also a tiny market that features Central American snacks, drinks and jerseys.

Yelp reviewers gave the restaurant an average rating of 4.6 stars out of five.

In her review, Yelp user Aly A. of Lincoln called the pupusas “very cheesy and very delicious” with “generous” portions.

“(Pupusa Central is) actually one of the spots that I would recommend to people trying out Salvadorian food for the first time,” Yelp reviewer Fiorella S. of Sacramento wrote. “We’ve gone back multiple times and the staff always remembers us! Try the yucca con chicharrón.”

Why is La Huaca Peruvian Cuisine a Roseville favorite?

La Huaca Peruvian Cuisine, 1850 Douglas Blvd., Suite 600, in Roseville, describes itself as the “bridge between tradition and innovation.”

The restaurant’s menu offerings include lomo saltado, a traditional beef tenderloin dish, and arroz del Pacifico Sur, a Peruvian-style paella.

The Roseville restaurant has an average Yelp rating of 4.3 stars.

Elite Yelp reviewer Hugo C. of Carmichael wrote that he’s become a restaurant regular who seeks to expand his knowledge by ordering new dishes.

“This time I ordered the tallarín verde con lomo saltado,” served with noodles in a green herb sauce instead of French fries, the Yelp reviewer wrote. “The lomo saltado was very flavorful, juicy ... and the tallarín verde was delicious and soaking up all (the) juice.”

Yelp user Jennifer D. of Hayward described the restaurant’s food “as good as it gets for Peruvian outside of Peru.”

Citrus Heights restaurant combines Puerto Rican, Honduran flavors

El Boritracho’s menu includes mofongo, a traditional Puerto Rican dish featuring fried green plantains with pork or seafood, and Honduran-style baledas, thick soft tortillas filled with refried beans.

The Citrus Heights restaurant has an average rating of 4.6 stars.

“This is our place. Treated us like kings,” Yelp reviewer Sandra M. of North Highlands wrote. “The food is off the hook and (served with) typical Latino portions. Come hungry!”

Elite Yelp user Sofia G. described the mofongo as “delicious” and called the passion fruit juice a highlight of an already wonderful meal.

Why is El Rincon Mexican Restaurant a Sacramento favorite?

El Rincon Mexican Restaurant, 3030 T St. in Sacramento, serves up traditional fare including tacos, burritos, seafood and nachos.

Popular dishes at the Sacramento restaurant include quesabirria, street tacos and the burrito supreme, according to DoorDash.

El Rincon Mexican Restaurant had an average Yelp rating of 4.4 stars out of five.

Elite Yelp reviewer Joanna G. of Sacramento called El Rincon Mexican Restaurant the best-woman owned Mexican restaurant in the city, describing the eatery’s owner behind the stove making the food.

“El Rincon is tiny but packs huge flavor when it comes to its tacos, salsas, tortas and churros,” the Yelp reviewer wrote. “They have a huge menu and I will definitely be back to try more items.”

Yelp user Erica G. of Chico described the food as “delicious” and said the restaurant “hit the spot.”

Tupi Coffee has authentic Brazilian coffee, food

Tupi Coffee, 1901 Eighth St. in Sacramento, serves up Brazilian-style food and drinks including iced coffees, lattes and teas. The local coffee shop chain has a sister location at 1801 L St., Suite 60, in Sacramento.

Food options include sandwiches and baked goods including beef rissoles — dumplings filled with ground meat — and pao de queijo, gluten-free cheese bread made from tapioca flour.

The cafe hosts rooftop events including yoga sessions and even offers a special rooftop tapas menu.

Tupi Coffee had an average rating of 4.5 stars on Yelp.

Elite Yelp reviewer Jen-Ann L. of Sacramento said the coffee shop’s owner is “super sweet” and has worked hard to bring Brazilian culture to the city. She highlighted the coxinha pastries with potatoes and chicken and ham-and-cheese rissoles for their “great texture and flavor.”

“My husband and I are coffee fanatics (beans matter) and this spot has made it to our top 5 best coffee in town,” Yelp reviewer Arianne G. of Sacramento wrote. “It’s a rare find.”
