It’s A Girlfriend Celebration invites women to social outing for two-day event
For women looking to make new friends and enjoy a weekend out, a two-day event in Sacramento aims to bring women together in the spirit of connection and fun.
It’s A Girlfriend Celebration, hosted by nonprofit Rich Girl Dream Inc., is a two-day event Oct. 31 and Nov. 1 at the SAFE Credit Union Convention Center, 1401 K St., downtown.
The event is being put on to “promote sisterhood among women and to celebrate friendship,” event founder Charmaine Bassett said.
Bassett, a radio personality on KDEE-FM (97.5) who goes by Lady Charmaine, first held the event in 2021. She was inspired to organize the event because of her late mother who was in search of friends when they first moved to Sacramento.
Bassett started a Facebook group called “Black Sistahs Making Friends.” The Facebook group ultimately evolved into the idea to host a get-together for the girls.
“I began to find that women in their ’50s, ’60s and ’70s were having a difficult time finding friends,” Bassett said. “Friendship is something that a lot of people wish they had, but they actually don’t. And so it’s a place where women can come together. We meet new women. Be encouraged, be inspired, be motivated.”
Bassett said the “It’s A Girlfriend Celebration” includes speakers, panelists and a lot of fun icebreaker activities such as double Dutch jump rope, hula-hooping and karaoke.
“We make it fun,” she said. “We have activities. We have 40-plus double Dutch. We have line dancing and more.”
Bassett said the event is for all ages. She said women from age 18 to as old as 94 years old have attended her event.
“I love seeing women come together. They’re so excited. One is giving them something to do is literally restoring them to where friendship can be. And they’re excited about meeting new women of all ages,” Bassett said. “You don’t feel the ageism, because you’ve come to have fun and everybody feels welcome.”
Tickets are priced at $125 for the two-day event, however using the promo code “GFC2025” event goers will receive a discount and tickets cost $99. The event is from 6 to 11 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday. Registration ends Friday.
