A vehicle crash Tuesday afternoon on the Capital City Freeway in Sacramento was sending up a column of black smoke after one of the vehicles caught fire, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The crash involving three vehicles was reported about 4:20 p.m. on the freeway near N Street, according to the CHP’s online dispatch records.

The CHP received reports that at one of the vehicles involved was engulfed in flames. The three vehicles involved in the crash were in the center divider, and two northbound lanes were blocked on the Capital City Freeway, stalling traffic during afternoon commute hours.

Authorities had called for ambulances to respond, but information on any reported injuries was not immediately available. The CHP cautioned drivers that they should expect delays in that area as firefighters respond to put out the fire.

At 5:12 p.m., the CHP reported that the blocked northbound lanes were now clear. A Caltrans camera on the freeway near N Street showed evening traffic moving slowly heading north. The CHP at 5:19 p.m. said minor injuries were reported in the crash.
