State jobs are known for offering competitive benefits and enrollment in the nation’s largest public pension plan.

Although some positions require employees to work in the office, others offer the option of working remotely from home with hybrid schedules.

Each job has different requirements, which are listed.

According to CalCareers, there were more than 2,800 open government positions in the state of California as of Monday, Nov. 17, including about 800 job openings in Sacramento County.

Chief operating officer | Permanent, full-time

  • Department: Judicial Council of California
  • Salary: $16,543 to $24,817 per month

Reporting to the chief deputy director, the chief operating officer serves as a member of the executive leadership of the council’s staff organization.

Duties including directing and administering personnel and programs as well as implementing Judicial Council policy and developing policy options for consideration by the advisory committees and council.

The chief operating officer collaborates with the executive team on the development and implementation of Judicial Council staff; provides leadership on high-profile and politically sensitive issues and represents the interests and positions of the Judicial Council to the other branches of government.

The chief operating officer is expected to work in person at the Judicial Council’s San Francisco or Sacramento office at least two days per week and live in the areas surrounding these locations.

Engineer | Permanent, full-time

Regional disaster public health manager | Permanent, full-time

Duties include developing roles and responsibilities in accordance with the Center for Preparedness and Response’s program vision, in addition to managing and providing oversight to the program and working with internal and external partners.

Research data specialist | Permanent, full-time

Operating within the Data Analytics Division, the research data specialist leads the design and execution of complex geographic information system-based studies, advanced modeling and performance assessments of utility wildfire mitigation plans.

The specialist provides authoritative consultation on data methods, policy evaluation and geospatial intelligence, helping transform utility and environmental data into actionable insights that drive safety, compliance and resilience across California’s energy systems.

Applicants living in California may be eligible for a hybrid telework schedule, which typically includes working remotely and physically reporting to the office a minimum of two days per week.

Forest carbon specialist | Permanent, full-time

The forest carbon specialist conducts a variety of activities related to development, implementation and analysis of the U.S. Forest Compliance Offset Protocol and associated projects. Under direction of an air resources supervisor, the specialist participates as a member of high-level technical engineering and scientific teams established to address technical and policy issues associated with the development of plans and protocols for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions as part of California’s Cap-and-Invest Program.

Duties include developing technical and statistical tools and approaches for assessing forest carbon quantification, monitoring and reporting applicable to the offsets program and other forest-related and land conservation efforts.

This position may be eligible for hybrid in-office work and in-state telework with the amount of telework dependent on the agency’s discretion and the Air Resources Board’s current telework policy.

Assistant bureau director | Permanent, full-time
