Body of missing Truckee man found by search-and-rescue near hiking trail

Missing person found

A Truckee man reported missing earlier this month was found dead near a popular hiking trail, police announced Friday.

Gordon Simons, 62, had last been seen in Truckee near his home. His family contacted authorities after being unable to reach him, the Truckee Police Department said.

The Nevada County Sheriff’s Office and its search-and-rescue team used a K9 team to search a popular hiking trail near Simons’ home last week. They found human remains near southbound Highway 89, close to the Union Pacific Railroad tracks, authorities said.

Investigators found no signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances at the scene. The remains were transferred to the Nevada County sheriff’s coroner’s division for further examination. A cause of death has not been determined.

Police confirmed the remains were identified as Simons and said his next of kin had been notified.
