Looking for a California state job that lets you work from home?

Several departments are now hiring for positions with remote work.

Despite California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s return-to-office order, new union agreements allow many state employees to keep working remotely through June 2026.

As of Wednesday, Dec. 3, California was hiring for several full-time positions offering hybrid schedule work options.

State jobs are known for their competitive benefits and enrollment in the nation’s largest public pension plan.

Many positions have specific qualifications, which are linked below.

Which California state jobs offer remote work?

Accountant trainee | Permanent, full time

  • Department: Parks and Recreation
  • Location: Sacramento County
  • Salary: $4,442 to $5,296 per month
  • Application due date: Tuesday, Dec. 9

The accountant trainee helps with accounting tasks.

This includes reviewing employee travel expense claims, communicating with department staff to resolve travel issues and managing the department’s travel advances.

This is a remote-centered position, according to the CalCareers website.

Accounting officer | Permanent, full time

  • Department: General Services
  • Location: Yolo County
  • Salary: $5,266 to $6,591 per month
  • Application due date: Friday, Dec. 12

The accounting officer checks and balances the state’s financial records, prepares reports and makes sure all accounting follows state regulations.

This position is eligible for telework, with up to three days of remote work, according to CalCareers.

Associate governmental program analyst | Permanent, full time

  • Department: Developmental Services
  • Location: Orange County
  • Salary: $6,031 to $7,547 per month
  • Application due date: Monday, Dec. 8

The associate governmental program analyst helps oversee and support a program for young children with developmental disabilities.

Duties include making sure programs follow federal rules as well as helping with compliance reports and providing guidance.

This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule, CalCareers said on its website.

Associate right-of-way agent | Permanent, full time

  • Department: Transportation
  • Location: Yuba County
  • Salary: $7,328 to $9,178 per month
  • Application due date: Tuesday, Dec. 16

The associate right-of-way agent works with property owners, tenants and the public on real estate matters by handling appraisals, property acquisition, relocations and projects.

A hybrid work schedule is available for this position, according to CalCareers.

Benefits specialist | Permanent, full time

  • Department: State Teachers’ Retirement System
  • Location: San Diego County
  • Salary: $6,031 to $7,547 per month

The benefits specialist helps members plan and manage their retirement benefits, keeping information confidential and resolving issues.

The division personnel liaison connects state programs and the department’s bureau by processing personnel requests, tracking positions, analyzing staffing data and creating reports.

This position can be filled in multiple locations, including Fresno, Orange, San Diego and Sacramento counties.

Hybrid work is available with this position.

Legal secretary | Permanent, full time

  • Department: State Compensation Insurance Fund
  • Locations: Multiple
  • Salary: $4,371 to $5,748 per month

The legal secretary provides legal support by handling secretarial tasks for attorneys.

This position can be filled in multiple locations, including Kern, Fresno, Sacramento, San Luis Obispo, Orange and San Joaquin counties.

Oracle database administrator | Permanent, full time

The program associate administrative analyst helps analyze data and create reports.

Duties include reviewing program information and tracking employee performance.

This position can be filled in multiple locations, including Bakersfield, Fresno, Riverside, Sacramento, San Diego, Santa Ana, Vacaville and Stockton.

Reimbursement accounts and recovery analyst | Permanent, full time

  • Department: Transportation
  • Location: Alameda County
  • Salary: $6,031 to $7,547 per month
  • Application due date: Sunday, Dec. 7

The reimbursement accounts and recovery analyst manages and tracks payments owed to Caltrans.

Duties include making sure bills are collected on time, overseeing project budgets and working with other agencies to resolve payment or billing issues.
