2 adults killed, 2 children airlifted after crash on El Dorado County highway

Roadway fatality

Two adult motorists were killed and their two children seriously injured Sunday afternoon in a single-vehicle crash on Highway 50 in El Dorado County, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred around 3:11 p.m. when a Chevrolet pickup traveling eastbound near Kyburz left the roadway and struck a tree on the south side of the highway, CHP Placerville spokesperson Officer Andrew Brown said. The driver and front-seat passenger were pronounced dead at the scene.

An 8-year-old boy and an 11-year-old girl, riding in the back seat, suffered major injuries. They were flown to a hospital in Reno, Nevada, for treatment, Brown said.

CHP investigators believe unsafe speed may have been a factor in the crash. There was no indication of alcohol impairment, but a toxicology analysis is standard in fatal collisions, Brown said.

Emergency responders worked for several hours to extricate the children from the wreckage, Brown confirmed.

The crash prompted a temporary closure of Highway 50 in the area. The roadway has since reopened.

The names of the deceased have not been released pending notification of next of kin.
