Van driver dies after fiery crash on I-80 in Sacramento County

Roadway fatality

A driver died Wednesday afternoon after a van crashed on Interstate 80 in Sacramento County, authorities said.

Fire crews responded shortly after 2:30 p.m. to a single-vehicle crash involving a van that had drifted off eastbound I-80 near Elkhorn Boulevard and hit a tree, Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District spokesperson Mark Nunez said.

Metro Fire personnel pronounced the driver dead at the scene. The crash caused the van to catch fire, Nunez said.

California Highway Patrol officials are investigating the cause of the crash, he said.
