1 dead in morning collision on American River Bridge; driver sought

A person struck by a vehicle Monday on the American River Bridge has died, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The unidentified person was struck just before 8:30 a.m., according to CHP dispatchers, who said witnesses to the collision came to the person’s aid. Authorities were unable to locate the driver involved in the collision. Callers to the CHP said the person was aboard a bicycle or motorized scooter and traveling against the flow of traffic at the time of the fatal crash, according to the highway patrol.

California Highway Patrol officers announced the fatality just before 10:15 a.m.

Sacramento County Coroner’s officials will identify the person after notifying next of kin.
