Police tape at crime scene

Three people were killed and two others were hospitalized after two vehicles collided Saturday afternoon at an intersection on the American River Parkway near North Sacramento.

Sacramento police officers responded just after 4:30 p.m. to reports of a crash at the intersection of Northgate and Del Paso boulevards, just below the Highway 160 crossing over the American River.

Officers and personnel from the Sacramento Fire Department found two of the motorists dead at the scene, officers said in a statement. Three additional people were taken to hospitals. One of those victims later died, said Officer Allison Smith, a spokesperson for the Police Department.

Detectives from the Police Department’s Major Collision Investigation Unit responded to take over the investigation, but the circumstances of the crash remained under investigation.

The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office was expected to release the identities of the deceased after next of kin were notified.

Police asked anyone who witnessed the crash or has information to call the police dispatch center at 916-808-5471 or Sacramento Valley Crime Stoppers at 916-443-4357. Tips may also be submitted anonymously through the P3 Tips smartphone app.
