Police: West Sacramento man arrested on suspicion of DUI after fatal crash

Roadway fatality

A Sacramento woman died and a West Sacramento man was taken into custody following a two-car crash Sunday on West Capitol Avenue, police said.

West Sacramento police officers responded about 1:40 p.m. to a major traffic collision in the 4700 block of West Capitol Avenue, according to a department statement. Both drivers were taken by ambulance to UC Davis Medical Center.

The woman, a 31-year-old Sacramento resident, later died at the hospital from her injuries, police said. Her name has not been released pending notification of next of kin by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office.

The other driver, a 28-year-old man from West Sacramento, was treated for minor injuries, police said.

Investigators later took the man into custody on suspicion of felony DUI and gross vehicular manslaughter. Police said alcohol and speed appeared to be factors in the crash, based on a preliminary investigation. Authorities said the investigation remained ongoing and no additional suspect information was being released.

Police asked anyone who witnessed the crash or who may have video evidence to contact the department’s traffic unit at 916-617-4747 and reference case No. 26-00320.
