Students OK after Robla school bus veers into Magpie Creek in North Sacramento
A Robla School District bus carrying at least 30 students veered off a roadway and into Magpie Creek on Monday morning in North Sacramento, authorities said.
The crash was reported at 7:24 a.m. as the bus traveled southbound on a two-lane portion of Raley Boulevard near Santa Ana Avenue in the Raley Industrial Park neighborhood, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Sacramento Fire Department officials said two people reported minor injuries. A spokesperson for the CHP’s North Sacramento office confirmed that none of the roughly 30 to 40 students aboard were injured, but said the bus driver was taken to a hospital to be checked out for pain from the crash. According to CHP officials, the bus came to rest in the creek but was being towed out later Monday morning.
Sacramento County’s automated creek gauge on Magpie Creek at Raley Boulevard has not produced a water-level reading since November 2024, according to county data. However, an upstream gauge at Watt Avenue showed the creek running about a foot deep within the channel Monday morning. A photo of the bus from the CHP showed its front end submerged to the middle of the front hubcap while the rear end of the bus was on dry land.
Several students were on the bus at the time of the crash, but it wasn’t immediately how many were aboard. Another school bus was sent to the scene and transported the children safely to school, officials said.
The cause of the crash remained under investigation, authorities said. It was not immediately clear which school the bus was headed to, though Main Avenue Elementary School is nearby.
