An inmate’s death late Tuesday at California State Prison, Sacramento, is being investigated as a homicide, state corrections officials said.

Authorities at the facility known as New Folsom identified the man killed as John Cisneros, 49.

Guards found Cisneros unresponsive in his cell about 9:15 p.m. and took his cellmate, Irvin Sanchez, 34, into custody, California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation officials said in a Wednesday statement. Medical staff performed life-saving measures but could not revive Cisneros, CDCR said. Cisneros was pronounced dead 9:59 p.m.

Cisneros had been housed in the Sacramento facility since being received from Los Angeles County in July 2015 to serve a five-year sentence for second-degree robbery. While incarcerated, he was sentenced again in Los Angeles County in 2017 to 28 years in prison for penetration, oral copulation and attempted rape with force/violence/fear of immediate bodily injury, the CDCR said.

Sanchez, in restricted custody since Cisneros’ death, was received from Los Angeles County in February 2013, and is serving 18 years for attempted second-degree murder with street gang and gun enhancements; as well as for concealing a firearm in a vehicle, according to the CDCR.

The Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office and state prison officials are investigating the case. The state Office of the Inspector General has also been notified, the CDCR said.

CSP, Sacramento, houses more than 2,200 medium-, maximum- and high-security incarcerated persons, according to corrections officials.
