A person was found dead after an early morning fire at a home in Smartsville in Yuba County, sheriff’s officials said Thursday.

Neighbors called Smartsville firefighters to the burning home in the 7200 block of Highway 20 about 3:18 a.m. Thursday, saying a person was possibly trapped inside, said Katy Goodson, a Yuba County Sheriff’s Department spokesperson.

Firefighters arrived to find the home fully engulfed in flames. Crews extinguished the fire and later found a body inside the home, Goodson said.

Yuba County coroner’s officials are determining the person’s identity and will notify family members after the identification has been made.

Smartsville Fire Protection District officials are investigating the cause of the blaze.

Smartsville is a census-designated place in Northern California, about 60 miles northeast of Sacramento.
