Sunrise Blvd. lane closed in Fair Oaks for emergency road work after inspection

Traffic Alert

One lane of a major Fair Oaks thoroughfare was closed Friday in an “emergency” action following an inspection, according to the Sacramento County Department of Transportation.

Transportation department inspectors discovered that a section of a sound wall parallel to Sunrise Boulevard south of Wildridge Drive was “buckling and leaning toward the roadway,” the department said in a news release. A sound wall is a freestanding barrier that blocks traffic noise for nearby residential properties.

The far-right southbound lane was closed Friday afternoon “out of precaution,” the release continued, and it was unclear when the wall will be fixed and the lane will reopen. The sidewalk was also shut down.

The other two southbound lanes and all northbound lanes will remain open, county transportation officials said.

The affected stretch of Sunrise Boulevard is just south of Citrus Heights city limits and about a mile south of Sunrise Mall.
