Sacramento morning roundup: ICE resolution, CA governor’s debate and more
From a chaotic governor’s race debate to a long-standing Sacramento business closing its doors, here’s a look at the top stories in Sacramento.
Here’s what to know today:
- Rug gallery closing: After nearly 50 years, Mansour’s Oriental Rug Gallery is closing its Arden Arcade location by the end of May. The closure follows financial challenges and founder Mansour Yaghoubian’s death in 2022. Rugs will be sold at up to 50% off.
- ICE enforcement restricted: The Sacramento City Council passed a resolution Tuesday to restrict federal immigration enforcement on city-owned land. More than two dozen speakers expressed disappointment that the measure was a resolution rather than a binding ordinance.
- Chaotic governor’s debate: Eight candidates sparred in a 90-minute CBS News debate at Pomona College ahead of the June 2 primary. Republican Steve Hilton led polling at 16%, followed by Democrat Tom Steyer at 15% and Xavier Becerra at 13%.
- Peach growers get relief: The USDA approved up to $9 million to help Central Valley farmers remove clingstone peach trees left without a buyer after the Del Monte Foods bankruptcy. The program will fund the removal of up to 420,000 trees across roughly 3,000 acres.
