Feel the breeze
The Delta breeze is cooling the valley this morning, but the gentle wind is expected to abate by noon. Still, temperatures are expected to be moderated by the natural air conditioning provided by the oceanic air pumped into the Sacramento area. The high today is expected to reach 90 degrees. The National Weather Service predicts a return of the Delta breeze tonight.
Elk Grove school district discusses 2016-17 calendar
The Elk Grove Unified School District board holds a special meeting from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Robert L. Trigg Education Center. Trustees will discuss changing the calendar of some elementary schools in 2016-17. The district has 13 elementary schools operating on a year-round calendar, 14 operating on a traditional calendar and 13 elementary school sites operating on a modified calendar. The Trigg Education Center is at 9510 Elk Grove Florin Road, Sacramento.
Classes begin at Twin Rivers district schools
It’s the first day of class in the Twin Rivers Unified School District. Students and parents will see many changes, including construction projects on many campuses. Many schools will get new roofs and asphalt in their parking lots, as well as exterior and interior repainting. Foothill, Highlands, Grant and Rio Linda high schools will have new artificial turf installed on their football fields.
Reagan, Chavez, UFW topic of talk
Historian Todd Holmes will present “The Fruits of Fracture: The Corporate West, the United Farm Workers’ Movement, and the Rise of Reaganism in American Politics.” Holmes will discuss the shifts in business and party politics during the governorship of Ronald Reagan and the role the boycott campaigns of Cesar Chavez and the UFW played in this transformation of the political economy. The talk takes place from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the California State Archives, 1020 O St.
