Two killed in Highway 99 crash south of Lodi; fleeing truck driver arrested

Roadway fatality

Two people were killed and a big-rig driver was arrested Tuesday in a crash involving four vehicles on Highway 99 in south Lodi, officials said.

The collision was reported about 12:20 p.m. on northbound Highway 99 near the Harney Lane off-ramp, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A 24-year-old truck driver was arrested on suspicion of felony vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence and felony hit-and-run resulting in death or injury, according to the CHP and San Joaquin County jail records. He also was booked on suspicion of misdemeanor resisting or obstructing a peace officer after trying to flee the scene, according to CHP Stockton office spokesperson Officer Itzel Aguilar.

Bail was set at $185,000, and he was scheduled to appear in court at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Several other people involved in the crash were taken to hospitals for treatment, Aguilar said.

It was not immediately clear whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the collision, Aguilar said.

All three lanes of northbound Highway 99 in the area and the Harney Lane off-ramp were closed for about three hours after the incident, according to a social media post from Caltrans.
