Zoo expansion plans, Costco grapevines. Top stories from The Sacramento Bee on 5/26
The Sacramento Bee published a range of stories Tuesday covering sports, local government, agriculture, politics and transportation.
Here is a quick digest of the day’s coverage:
- The Sacramento Zoo released revised expansion plans that no longer replace a historic statue of Charles Swanston and an adjacent garden in William Land Park. The zoo will instead seek land north of its entrance along Land Park Drive and 15th Avenue, using about 0.2 acres less of the park than originally proposed.
- Invasive glassy-winged sharpshooters were found on grapevines sold at Costco stores in Sacramento County and other Northern California counties. While 160 grapevines have been destroyed, hundreds more remain unaccounted for in the possession of community members, raising concerns about Pierce’s disease spreading to local vineyards.
- Former Sacramento Kings head coach Mike Brown thanked Kings owner Vivek Ranadivé after leading the New York Knicks to the NBA Finals in his first season with the team. The Knicks swept the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference finals with a 130-93 Game 4 victory, just 17 months after Brown was fired by Sacramento.
- Sacramento Regional Transit is seeking community input on the $164 million Downtown Riverfront Streetcar Project, which would connect existing light rail lines to Sutter Health Park and Old Sacramento. The 1.8-mile project with three new stations is expected to begin construction in early 2027 and finish by late 2029 or early 2030.
- State Sen. Angelique Ashby endorsed Mai Vang in her challenge against longtime Rep. Doris Matsui for California’s 7th Congressional District. Matsui has reported $1.5 million in contributions plus a $1.4 million loan, while Vang has raised more than $800,000 in the race framed as a generational battle.
