Hot weather respite opens at Sacramento’s North A St. shelter ahead of hot temps
Sacramento County Department of Homeless Services and Housing opened its hot weather respite at North A Shelter through Saturday, officials announced, as daytime temperatures were forecast to reach triple digits beginning Thursday.
The shelter, 1400 N. A St., will be open from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. daily, providing a cool, safe space away from the heat. Visitors can use restrooms, charge electronic devices and receive meals. Light case management services are also available, county officials said.
Residents can call 211 or 916-498-1000 to check shelter capacity.
Sacramento County coordinated with First Step Communities to open the respite center after reviewing forecasts from the National Weather Service in Sacramento.
National Weather Service forecasters announced a hot weather advisory for the northern and central Sacramento Valley from 11 a.m. Thursday through 11 p.m. Saturday, citing warm overnight low temperatures.
High temperatures were expected to range between 100 and 105 degrees in the valley and Sierra Nevada foothills through the weekend. Forecasters urged residents to prepare for moderate to major heat risk. Elevated temperatures increase the risk of heat stress and heat-related illness for both people and animals.
Forecasters recommended staying hydrated, limiting time in direct sunlight between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., and staying in a cool place during the hottest part of the day.
