4 outbuildings damaged in south Sacramento grass fire amid tough conditions

Firefighters stopped forward progress on a 2-acre grass fire in south Sacramento County that damaged four outbuildings and threatened multiple homes Wednesday afternoon, officials with the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District said.

About 12:55 p.m., firefighters were dispatched to the area of Elder Creek Road and Bradshaw Boulevard near the Vineyard neighborhood, Metro Fire spokesperson Capt. Mark Nunez said in a news release.

When crews with Metro Fire and the Cosumnes CSD Fire Department arrived, the fire was moving “rapidly” with heavy smoke in the area, Nunez said.

Firefighters deployed hose lines and protected nearby homes, Nunez said. No injuries were reported.

Metro Fire’s Investigation Team remained on the scene investigating the cause and origin of the fire, Nunez said.

Is Sacramento part of the red flag warning?

Wednesday’s fire came while much of the Sacramento Valley was under a red flag warning fire conditions due to high wind speeds, high temperatures and low humidity, according to the National Weather Service.

While Sacramento County was not included in the red flag warning zone, difficult firefighting conditions still applied, according to Nunez.

With temperatures expected to reach 100 degrees in some places later this week, officials urged residents to use caution when operating equipment or performing activities that may create sparks.

“Simple actions such as mowing dry grass, welding, grinding, or dragging trailer chains can quickly ignite vegetation and lead to fast-moving fires,” Nunez said in the release. “As temperatures rise, please remain vigilant and do your part to help prevent wildfires in our community.”
