Evangeline’s Costume Mansion to reopen after year of renovations following fire

About a year after a fire damaged the first floor of Evangeline’s Costume Mansion at 113 K St., the shop announced Monday its Grand Reopening to take place June 27 on the upper two floors of the historic house. Doors to the building on the Old Sacramento Waterfront will open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. for both days of the reopening weekend.

“I can’t wait,” said Deborah Chaussé, the store’s owner. “It’s just so beautiful. The staff has done an amazing job, and it’s just glittering and sparkling.”

To celebrate the reopening of the second and third floors of the house, the store will gift swag bags filled with exclusive branded merchandise for the first 200 guests and mark 10% off everything in the store for the entirety of the weekend. A vintage 1962 Cadillac Superior Combo Hearse will also be parked in front of the house, and free entertainment will take place both days that weekend. In addition to festivities in and around the house itself, a K Street Market event will be taking place and will close the road to vehicles between Front and Second streets.

The fire, which took place on June 17 had destroyed around half of the first floor of the house, in addition to ruining merchandise, leading the store to close.

The renovation, she said, has “been challenging and exciting,” and has consisted of cleaning, organizing, and reordering.

The costume mansion was first opened in the historic Howard House in 1974 by Dorothea Evangeline Chaussé, and originally sold antiques before expanding to sell toys, cards, and gifts. Only once the shop was handed down to Deborah, Dorothea’s daughter, did the house begin to sell Halloween costumes.

Despite the successful renovations of the upper two floors of the house, the first floor gift shop remains closed for the time being. There is still painting and electrical work that needs to be done, said Chaussé. She expects it to be at least several months before the first floor is opened again.
