West Sacramento unveils Washington Park, expanding neighborhood access to parks
West Sacramento opened Washington Park, its newest neighborhood park, during a ribbon-cutting ceremony Thursday.
The new park is located within the Four40 West development, which includes more than 100 housing units, infrastructure improvements and the new park on a site west of Fifth Street and south of the railroad tracks.
Before the park opened, the closest playground for children in the Washington District was more than a mile away.
Located at the corner of Sixth and E streets, the half-acre park includes a playground and grassy area. The city held a groundbreaking at the site in July and had anticipated opening the park in early 2026.
The ribbon-cutting featured remarks from West Sacramento city leaders and a representative from BlackPine, the company behind the 106-unit development.
Four40 West has been years in the making, Mike Paris, CEO of BlackPine, told a crowd of about three dozen people. The company and the city have been working on plans for the site for a decade, he said.
“This project is a great example of what can be accomplished through strong public-private partnerships,” said Traci Michel, who leads the city’s Economic Development and Housing Department. “This park is more than a neighborhood amenity,” Michel said. “It’s an investment in West Sacramento’s future.”
Washington Park is the city’s 40th park and embodies West Sacramento’s commitment to creating livable communities across the city, West Sacramento Mayor Martha Guerrero said. Guerrero described the park opening as “an achievement worth celebrating.”
“A great city is measured not only by the buildings we construct or the roads we pave,” she said. “It is measured by the spaces we create for people to live, connect, and belong.”
West Sacramento’s Washington District is adjacent to the Sacramento River and Sutter Health Park. It is the center of the city’s waterfront revitalization efforts, which include retail and housing developments designed to bring more people to the city and make it a regional destination for recreation and retail. Washington Park supports that mission by creating a space for young families.
“Children will laugh on these playgrounds, families will celebrate milestones, friends will gather, and neighbors will create memories right here,” Guerrero said. “That is the true value of public investment.”
