Multiple vehicles were damaged in a salvage yard fire Wednesday morning in Rio Linda, Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District officials said.

Metro Fire crews responded to a report of vehicles on fire at 6233 Blacktop Road about 10:14 a.m. Upon arrival, firefighters found multiple vehicles burning inside a salvage yard.

About 15 vehicles were damaged as firefighters from Metro Fire and the Sacramento Fire Department used an aggressive attack to contain the blaze, said Capt. Mark Nunez, a spokesperson for Metro Fire.

No injuries were reported. Sacramento County Hazardous Materials personnel remained on scene about noon to cleanup and evaluate potential environmental concerns, Nunez said.

Nunez said owners of electric vehicles should be aware that the vehicles present unique hazards. High-voltage lithium-ion battery systems that power electric vehicles are especially prone to thermal runaway if damaged, which can produce intense heat, toxic gases and prolonged fire conditions requiring specialized firefighting and hazardous materials personnel to control the incident.

He also advised drivers whose vehicles catch fire to pull over safely, exit immediately, move to a safe location and call 911.
