A magnitude 5.6 earthquake in Mendocino County triggered ShakeAlerts across the Sacramento region Wednesday morning. Here’s a look at that story and other top headlines from Wednesday:

• A magnitude 5.6 earthquake struck about 7 miles north of Redwood Valley in Mendocino County at 8:10 a.m. Wednesday, triggering nearly 657,000 MyShake alerts and knocking out power to roughly 8,000 PG&E customers, according to the U.S. Geological Survey and state emergency officials. County officials reported six to eight preliminary injuries within the first hour.

• Folsom High School quarterback Brody Rudnicki verbally committed to play for Cal on a full athletic scholarship Wednesday morning. The 6-foot-2 rising star started just twice in varsity football but led the Bulldogs to a CIF State championship with a 42-28 win over Cathedral Catholic.

• The Sacramento City Unified school board voted to declare the former El Dorado Elementary School as surplus property, clearing the way to sell the 4.83-acre East Sacramento site. Trustees also backed historic designation for the 1920s-era property and signaled support for including moderate- and low-income housing in any redevelopment.
