Firefighters get handle on Campers Fire in Dunnigan after one home destroyed
A 17-acre wildfire that prompted evacuations and closed southbound Interstate 5 on Monday was fully contained after destroying one home.
The fire was reported at 1:22 p.m. along Interstate 5, burning roadside vegetation and a grove of eucalyptus trees, according to the California Highway Patrol. Evacuation orders were issued about an hour later, and the Dunnigan Fire Protection District established an evacuation center at its fire station on Main Street in Dunnigan, according to the Yolo County Office of Emergency Services.
At least one home was destroyed by the fire, according to news reports.
The evacuation area was reduced, and southbound I-5 was reopened around 6:30 p.m. as firefighters continued mop-up operations at the blaze that was mapped at 16.9 acres.
By 9:30 p.m., the remaining evacuation order had been lifted, according to the Yolo County Office of Emergency Services.
The blaze caused about 190 PG&E customers to lose power, but service was restored Monday night, according to the PG&E outage center.
Initial CHP logs indicated a caller reported the fire may have started after a black pickup truck suffered a tire blowout, spun off the roadway and caught fire.
Officials have not confirmed the cause of the blaze. Dunnigan Fire Protection District officials said they would provide additional information but had not done so by noon Tuesday.
