Firefighters halted the forward progress of the Happy Fire, a collection of small blazes burning Tuesday along a roadside southeast of Placerville, and evacuation orders affecting about 300 area residents had been downgraded to warnings.

The blaze, which officials at one point estimated could reach 50 acres, had been halted at 5 acres. Officials have not yet released any information on the fire’s cause.

The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office issued a mandatory evacuation for the Oak Leaf Circle area and along Mount Aukum Road between Somerset Loop and Happy Valley Cutoff Road. Residents were directed to leave via Mount Aukum Road, traveling either north to Pleasant Valley Road or south to Four Corners. The order affected roughly 300 residents, according to evacuation data provided by the Perimeter Map system used by the county.

Mount Aukum Road was closed to southbound motorists at the community of Pleasant Valley, preventing travel into the fire zone.

Officials also issued an evacuation warning for the area east of the evacuation order zone. Residents in the warning area were advised to prepare to leave if conditions worsened.

A temporary evacuation point was established at the Placerville Library, 345 Fair Lane, according to the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office.

The Happy Fire was made up of three fires burning across 10 acres as of 3:10 p.m, the Cal Fire Amador-El Dorado Unit reported.

The fire was burning near Mount Aukum Road and Happy Valley Cutoff Road, according to the Cal Fire Amador-El Dorado Unit. Ground crews and least three aircraft responded to the fire, according to Cal Fire’s incident page.

Video from an AlertCalifornia wildfire camera showed thick smoke rising over the wooded foothills. Emergency radio traffic described the incident as a vegetation fire, though it was not immediately clear whether it had spread into timber.

No injuries or damaged structures had been reported Tuesday afternoon.
