Rocklin road rage conviction, I-80 shooting update. The Bee’s top stories July 6
From a Placer County road rage conviction, a fatal deputy shooting on Interstate 80 and new minimum wage increases across California, here’s what you should know for this Monday:
- A Placer County father and son were convicted Monday in a deadly Rocklin road rage confrontation, with Blake Anthony Rakela, 21, pleading no contest to voluntary manslaughter in the March 2025 wrench beating death of 55-year-old Jeremy Styles. Blake Rakela will serve four years in prison, while his father, Anthony David Rakela, 61, pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor assault charge and will receive 90 days of probation.
- A man fatally shot by Sacramento County sheriff’s deputies on eastbound Interstate 80 near Citrus Heights on Sunday had brutally beaten his former wife for days before the chase, authorities said. The woman told deputies she was repeatedly pistol-whipped and strangled over three days before playing dead to escape and call for help, and the armed man pointed his weapon at deputies before they opened fire.
- Eleven California cities raised their local minimum wages effective July 1, with new hourly rates ranging from $17.76 in Alameda to $20.34 in Emeryville. The increases exceed California’s $16.90 statewide minimum wage, and affected cities include Fremont, Malibu, Milpitas, Pasadena, San Francisco and Santa Monica.
