Elk Grove issues $239K in illegal fireworks fines from Fourth of July crackdown

The Elk Grove Police Department issued $239,000 in citations for illegal fireworks violations during the Fourth of July holiday and received more than 400 calls for service.

According to the department, officers issued 37 citations for illegal fireworks. The only permitted fireworks are non-aerial “Safe and Sane” fireworks purchased at approved local booths bearing the seal of the California State Fire Marshal.

Between 6 p.m. and midnight on July 4, the department received 116 calls to 911 and 273 calls to the non-emergency line, according to the department.

The department utilized its four drone units, conducting 48 flights totaling 692 minutes to identify illegal fireworks from the air, according to the department.

According to the Cosumnes Community Services District Fire Department, the use of “Safe and Sane” fireworks is permitted in Elk Grove between June 28 and July 5.

The possession or use of illegal fireworks is subject to a fine of up to $1,000 per illegal firework, according to a 2024 City Council resolution.
