2nd victim recovered from Alcatraz boat sinking ID'd as Sacramento County woman
The body of a second victim was recovered Thursday following the sinking of a three-level yacht near Alcatraz Island and has been identified by San Francisco authorities as a Sacramento County resident. Two passengers of the vessel remained missing as of Thursday evening.
The San Francisco Office of the Chief Medical Examiner identified Tondra Lynn Madruga, 58, also known as Tondra Miller, as the second victim in Tuesday’s incident in an emailed statement Thursday evening. Her family had been notified of her death, according to David Serrano Sewell, executive director of the medical examiner’s office.
The Volare, a 49-foot cabin cruiser registered in Stockton, sank around 3:40 p.m. Tuesday near Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay with 20 occupants on board, San Francisco Fire Department and U.S. Coast Guard officials said Wednesday.
Authorities said Wednesday that 16 occupants had been rescued, some with injuries, while one victim was confirmed dead and three others were reported missing. Authorities also said a dog was found dead.
The first victim — identified Wednesday by the medical examiner as 79-year-old Clifford Boisa of Sutter County — has been described in news reports as the boat captain’s brother. Boisa was a retired reserve deputy with the Sutter County Sheriff’s Office, the agency confirmed.
The Coast Guard suspended its search efforts around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday for the three people who remained missing. The San Francisco Police Department resumed search-and-recovery efforts Thursday.
Around 1 p.m. Thursday, marine officers with the San Francisco Police Department conducting sonar scans located a body west of Treasure Island, the department said in a statement.
Public records listed Madruga as a Folsom resident. A corresponding Facebook profile identified her as a native of San Luis Obispo who attended Bella Vista High School in Fair Oaks. Madruga held a real estate salesperson license from 2006 to 2018 associated with an address in Fair Oaks, according to state Department of Real Estate records.
The Madruga family released a statement Thursday afternoon mourning her death.
“Following Tuesday’s boating accident in the San Francisco Bay, our family is heartbroken by the loss of our beloved mother, daughter, sister, and aunt, Tondra Madruga.
“As this event has received significant public attention, we thank you for respecting the privacy of our family and all those affected as we grieve. Our hearts remain with every family impacted, and we sincerely appreciate your kindness and understanding.
“We extend our heartfelt thanks to the U.S. Coast Guard, the San Francisco Fire Department, the San Francisco Police Department, all of the first responders, and the civilian boaters and community members who selflessly assisted in the search and rescue efforts. Your dedication and support mean more to our family than words can express.
“Thank you for your prayers, love, and support,” the message ended.
