Driver killed, another hospitalized in Elk Grove Boulevard crash near Interstate 5
A 51-year-old Sacramento woman allegedly fled an earlier hit-and-run crash before a collision that killed a 78-year-old Elk Grove resident and left the woman with serious injuries late Thursday on Elk Grove Boulevard near Interstate 5, according to the Elk Grove Police Department.
Police said the woman, driving a silver Honda Accord, fled a minor hit-and-run crash at Elk Grove and Franklin boulevards minutes before the fatal collision at Elk Grove Boulevard and Stonelake Drive on the city’s west side.
Officers arrived to find the silver Honda Accord on its side in the roadway. The 51-year-old driver was freed from the wreckage and taken to a hospital. She remained hospitalized Friday with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
The 78-year-old driver of a white Honda Accord was pronounced dead at the scene. The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will release the driver’s name after notifying next of kin.
Investigators believe the 78-year-old was driving east on Elk Grove Boulevard near Stonelake Drive when the westbound silver Honda Accord crossed into the eastbound lanes.
The silver Honda struck the center median, became airborne and crashed head-on into the eastbound Honda, police said.
No arrests have been made, but traffic investigators believe alcohol may have been a factor in the fatal crash, department officials said.
“The investigation remains active, and any appropriate criminal charges or enforcement action will be determined as the investigation progresses and her medical condition improves,” a department statement read.
The section of Elk Grove Boulevard between Waterfowl and East Taron drives remained closed until early Friday while investigators examined the scene. Officers reopened the roadway just after 5 a.m., the police department said.
