A.M. Sacramento: Here’s what you need to know for Thursday

Good morning. Here’s what you need to know today:

Round two of rain: The first of three systems on Wednesday was, as advertised, showery but not stormy. The second wave expected Thursday afternoon is predicted to be about the same -- nothing to write home about. The third, forecast to arrive Friday night, will be wetter and breezier but still not a good soaking. The three storms are predicted to add up to about one-third of an inch precipitation in Sacramento.

Bee Public Eye: Carissa Carpenter, the would-be Dixon movie studio impresario, is scheduled to make her first appearance in Sacramento federal court this afternoon on fraud charges. But scheduled court appearances are a tricky matter when they involve Carpenter, who has a decades-long history not only of lawsuits and liens – but of delaying or missing her dates in court, public records show.

Sheriff takes immigration stand: It was a promise the sheriff made to the widow of slain Sacramento County deputy Danny Oliver: that he would call on lawmakers to secure the nation’s borders and document the millions of immigrants in this country illegally, one of whom stands accused of killing Oliver. In an eight-minute video posted to YouTube this week, Sheriff Scott Jones urges President Barack Obama to take action and create “meaningful immigration reform.”

Sacramento’s next pitch: Sacramento officials will be back in New York today to pitch the city’s effort for a Major League Soccer expansion franchise, along with rival groups from Minneapolis and Las Vegas.

Wanted by the FBI: The FBI’s Sacramento Division has renewed an international campaign to find Julio Cesar Guevara-Mejia, a Honduran man accused of shooting a woman in a Davis hotel room seven years ago. The FBI is offering a reward of up to $15,000 for information leading directly to the capture of Guevara-Mejia.

Author reading: Dan Winkelman, author of “Lake Natoma: A Ranger in Search of Walden Pond,” will have a book talk and reading at 7 p.m. today at the Murer House and Learning Center, 1125 Joe Murer Court, in Folsom.
