A home-care franchise company is offering free home safety assessments for local seniors Dec. 1-5, as part of its ongoing fall prevention efforts.
Nurse Next Door, based in Roseville, is hoping that 100 older adults sign up for the home inspection, which includes checking on the use of area rugs and improper footwear, poor lighting and the lack of grab bars.
Although most falls are preventable, experts say, falls are the leading cause of injury in people 65 and older. One in three people in that age group suffers a fall each year -- and the number of deaths resulting from falls has soared in recent years.
