An inch of rain is forecast to fall in Sacramento beginning Tuesday and continuing into Wednesday.

Until then, the skies are expected to be gray and the temperature should hover around 65 degrees in the Sacramento region.

The rainfall total for the season stands at 2.21 inches in Sacramento, which is 57 percent of normal for Dec. 1. The long Thanksgiving weekend weather dreariness delivered 0.58 inch of rain.

The National Weather Service is predicting that rainfall totals of an inch or two are possible by Thursday in the Sacramento Valley. In the Sierra Nevada, the highest elevations may see a foot of snow.

Precipitation is expected to spread late Tuesday morning. A low pressure system is forecast to tap into moisture off the coast of Baja California.

Drawing on that wet Baja weather system could produce some impressive precipitation for Northern California, according to the weather service. Gusty winds are also possible at times.
