Advocates of a proposal to turn the vacant minimum security barracks at Dewitt Center in Auburn into a temporary homeless shelter will seek to make their case Tuesday before the Placer County Board of Supervisors. The groups Right Hand Auburn and the Auburn Area Homeless Forum sent a plan to the board in October for a program that would be run by Volunteers of America, which operates homeless shelters in Sacramento and Reno.
The only cost to the county would be donation of the building, according to a news release from the Auburn Area Homeless Forum. Shelter advocates plan to speak during the public comment portion of the meeting, which begins at 9 a.m. at the Placer County Administrative Center, 175 Fulweiler Ave., Auburn.
