A.M. Sacramento: Here’s what you need to know for Monday

Good morning. Here’s what you need to know today, Monday, Dec. 8, 2014.

Big storm a comin’: Fog should clear by 10 a.m. this morning as forecasters turn their attention to a big storm expected to hit with greatest intensity on Thursday. The blustery storm has the potential to snap some tree branches, rattle some Christmas lights against rain gutters and knock out some power in the Sacramento area. Rainfall from 1 to 5 inches is predicted for the Sacramento Valley.

Small, promising start: A grocery store chain called Viva is planning to open a new shop in an empty building on Marysville Boulevard, right by the corner of Grand Avenue. It might seem like a relatively small thing, but to the people of this proud part of town, the store on a neighborhood crossroads could be significant.

Big league again?: Will Sacramento, which has a claim to major league status through its relationship with the NBA Kings, become a city with two franchises playing at the top level of sports? Once Major League Soccer decides where their newest franchise will reside, Sacramento will know the answer.

Jazzing it up: Betz Storey has plenty of hats, no doubt, but she’s really known for her knowledge of and love for jazz music. Storey keeps locals in the know about who’s gigging where with her monthly publication. Steve Magagnini tells her tail.

Local sports: The Sacramento Kings finish their home stand with a game against the Utah Jazz at Sleep Train Arena beginning at 7 p.m.
