A strong weather system is just off the Pacific coast, ready to move inland with heavy rain and higher elevation snowfall at times, beginning Wednesday night and continuing into Friday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

The storm could drop 3 inches of rain in Sacramento. Rainfall is expected to start Wednesday night.

The brunt of the storm arrives with at least an inch projected to fall from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday. Winds are expected to be fierce Thursday morning, subsiding in the afternoon.

Widespread power outages and falling tree limbs are possible.

Thursday night and early Friday morning another inch of rain could fall before skies begin to dry on Friday.

The detailed, seven-day forecast from the NWS for the Sacramento region:

Wednesday: A 30 percent chance of rain after 4 p.m. Areas of dense fog before 10 a.m. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a high near 63. South-southeast wind 5 to 10 mph.

Wednesday night: Rain, mainly after 10 p.m. Steady temperature around 60. Windy, with a southeast wind 18 to 23 mph increasing to 26 to 31 mph after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 47 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80 percent. New precipitation amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

Thursday: Rain, with thunderstorms also possible after 10 a.m. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Steady temperature around 59. Windy, with a south-southeast wind 27 to 32 mph decreasing to 21 to 26 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 48 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100 percent. New rainfall amounts between 1 and 2 inches possible.

Thursday night: Showers. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Low around 49. South-southeast wind 6 to 11 mph becoming light and variable in the evening. Chance of precipitation is 100 percent. New rainfall amounts between 1 and 2 inches possible.

Friday: Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm. Cloudy, with a high near 56. South-southeast wind around 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70 percent.

Friday night: A 50 percent chance of showers. Areas of fog after 4 a.m. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a low around 46.

Saturday: Areas of fog before 10 a.m. Otherwise, partly sunny, with a high near 57.

Saturday night: Areas of fog after 10 p.m. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a low around 41.

Sunday: Areas of fog before 10 a.m. Otherwise, partly sunny, with a high near 55.
