A.M. Sacramento: Here’s what you need to know for Sunday
Good morning. Here’s what you need to know today:
Fog, then chance of rain: The respite from the last storm will continue today through late afternoon in Sacramento. There is a 10 percent chance of showers after 4 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. There will be areas of dense fog before 10 a.m., but most of the day will be partly sunny, with a high near 54. There is a 50 percent chance of showers, mainly after 10 p.m., according to the weather service.
More storms needed: The major storm that just hammered California did a lot to boost river flows in Northern California. But experts say it would take five or six more storms like that to break the three-year drought.
Sacramento protests: Protesters took the Sacramento streets Saturday in two separate events. A boisterous crowd of 75 people marched from Southside Park to the state Capitol on Saturday morning, chanting “Hands up don’t shoot” and “I can’t breathe” to draw attention to the deaths of young black men at the hands of police. The “Just Justice” protest, organized by the Sacramento chapter of the NAACP, brought out people from all walks of life. A separate demonstration, organized by the California Campaign to End Police Terror, found another 75 protesters marching through midtown and downtown streets Saturday night, causing traffic disruptions.
Tribute to Rosie: A special event will be held tonight as part of a toy drive to benefit Sutter Children’s Center. Nicole and George Carollo had always done decorations big, but the project took on new meaning after the passing of their first daughter Rosie in 2004, who died of infantile spasms, a form of epilepsy, at 21 months old. Toys are being collected in the Carollo driveway at 3961 Fair Oaks Blvd. in Sacramento throughout December. At a special event from 5 to 9 p.m. today, the family will pay tribute to Rosie with festivities.
