Free passes to state redwood parks almost run out

A popular Black Friday promotion by the conservation group Save the Redwoods League has nearly run out of free state redwood park passes, with 4,900 handed out through Wednesday afternoon.

The group has exhausted its supply of free passes to 32 parks, including Calaveras Big Trees State Park in the Sierras and several in the Monterey area. About 100 passes remained Wednesday for another 17 parks farther north up the California coast. Visitors must download a free day-use pass at SaveTheRedwoods.org/freefriday and bring with them the printed copy to enter.

Anyone can still pay to enter all the parks.

Save the Redwoods League budgeted $50,000 for the promotion, which encouraged people to get outdoors during the traditional shopping day after Thanksgiving, said spokeswoman Patsy Barich.
