Weekend cooking classes preps families for holidays
With a week of potlucks and holiday hosting coming up for many, it may be time to bulk up the repertoire of festive foods. The Sacramento Natural Foods Co-op has been offering cooking courses on health-conscious holiday eating all month, but will wrap up the offerings this weekend with three final classes.

Sprouting Chefs: Holiday Brunch
When: Friday Dec. 19, 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.
What: Parents help kids make a holiday menu including sweet and savory crepes; root vegetable hash; citrus fruit salad, and pomegranate sparklers. Suggested for ages 5-8.
Cost: $25, $20 for co-op members
Kids and Teens in the Kitchen: Holiday Treats
When: Saturday Dec. 20, 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
What: Students learn essential cooking skills and make holiday snacks including hot chocolate, pumpkin bread, tortilla pinwheels and ‘party penguins’. Suggested for ages 9-15.
Cost: $45, $30 for co-op members
Tamales for the Holidays
When: Monday Dec. 22, 6 p.m. to 8:30p.m.
What: This hands-on workshop will teach participants how to make tamales, a holiday tradition in many Latin cultures.
Cost: $49, $40 co-op members
