A.M. Sacramento: Here’s what you need to know for today

Kaylee’s grandmother had prepared her by saying Santa is not scary, over and over. At the mall, she went up to the fence around Santa and walked in between two fence posts. Then she folded her arms and just stared at him as he tried to coax her to come closer. Finally, she did sit on his lap but immediately put her hands over her face and wouldn’t say a word.

Merry Christmas. Here’s what you need to know today:

Sunny holiday: Expect a sunny Christmas in Sacramento, with a high near 56 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. There will be breezy north northwest winds 14 to 18 mph, with gusts to 28 mph, the weather service forecasts.

From our readers: When The Sacramento Bee published a picture of Santa Claus and a screaming child last week, it resonated with nearly 240 readers who emailed their photographic Santa treasures (one is pictured above). Five members of The Bee’s photography staff combed through all of them. Enjoy. Laugh. Keep making pictures you will treasure forever. Merry Christmas.

Spiritual grants: To spread the Christmas spirit year-round, the Presbytery of Sacramento has initiated New Worshiping Communities grants to meet the spiritual needs of people who might otherwise be turned off by the idea of church and religion. One grant, in Esparto, funds a church-based yoga class; another brings together Millennials for meetings in Midtown Sacramento on how they can serve others.

Christmas “Interview”: The Sony picture “The Interview” will be released theatrically today in at least two Sacramento-area theaters. Palladio 16 Cinemas in Folsom and Angels 6 Theatres in Angels Camp, both owned by Petaluma-based Cinema West, will screen the movie. On Wednesday, Sony Pictures broadly released “The Interview” online.

Book of Dreams: From Nov. 26 to Dec. 18, The Sacramento Bee shared with you 12 stories of good people in need. Your response during the annual holiday charity drive was again uplifting. To date, the Book of Dreams has raised more than $130,000 and generated hundreds of donations. Readers can continue to donate online until Jan. 16.
