Joe Riquelme graduated from UC Davis in 2006 and became a high-tech success story after founding the popular smartphone app Videoshop and other start-up companies.

In the past couple of days, Riquelme has gained worldwide notice for paying off his parents’ mortgage in a homemade video that’s gone viral. It shows the young man sitting between his parents on a sofa and handing them an envelope with a simple note inside that reads, “Your house is paid off.”

His parents tear up and embrace him.

Reached by phone, the soft-spoken Riquelme declined an interview request from The Sacramento Bee. He said he felt he’d already disclosed too much by posting the video on his YouTube channel. Now it’s featured on dozens of websites in London, Australia and the U.S.
