The day dawned with another chilly morning, a frosty beginning marked by freezing temperatures in the Sacramento area.

The National Weather Service had a freeze warning in effect until 9 a.m. The rest of the day looks great with fair skies and temperatures in the low 50s in Sacramento area.

A high pressure system over the eastern Pacific Ocean and the West Coast is forecast to bring continued fair skies over the weekend. Daytime highs on Saturday and Sunday are expected to be a little warmer than normal for early January, according to the NWS.

A chance of rain is forecast for Thursday.

The detailed, seven-day forecast from the NWS for the Sacramento region:

Friday: Areas of frost before 10 a.m. Otherwise, sunny with a high near 53. Calm wind becoming northwest around 5 mph in the afternoon.

Tonight: Patchy fog after 10 p.m. Otherwise, mostly clear with a low around 34. Light and variable wind.

Saturday: Patchy fog before 10 a.m. Otherwise, sunny with a high near 57. Calm wind.

Saturday night: Patchy fog after 10 p.m. Otherwise, mostly clear with a low around 38. Calm wind.

Sunday: Patchy fog before 10 a.m. Otherwise, mostly sunny with a high near 58. Light north northwest wind.

Sunday night: Patchy fog after 10 p.m. Otherwise, partly cloudy with a low around 41.

Monday: Patchy fog before 10 a.m. Otherwise, partly sunny with a high near 60.

Monday night: Patchy fog after 10 p.m. Otherwise, partly cloudy with a low around 42.

Tuesday: Patchy fog before 10 a.m. Otherwise, mostly sunny with a high near 62.
