Kudos to: Peter Ewing, Cal State Los Angeles graduate student
Accomplishment: Received award for outstanding student teaching in the 23-campus California State University system
Details: The award acknowledges CSU student teachers in biotechnology-related courses and programs. Ewing, a Sacramento native, initially majored in psychology and medieval studies at UC Davis but found an interest in biology. He took classes at community colleges and at Sacramento State. Along with his studies, he worked full time as a dispatcher at the Sacramento Police Department for about seven years, according to Cal State Los Angeles.

Accomplishment: Recognized for community work
Details: The university’s commitment was recognized through the Carnegie Foundation Community Engagement Classification. Sacramento State’s Engagement Center oversees activities such as Alternative Break, where students donate time to community projects.
Kudos to: 349th Air Mobility Wing at Travis Air Force Base
Accomplishment: Given outstanding unit award for meritorious service between Oct. 1, 2011, and Sept. 30, 2013
Details: Aircraft offloaded 2.2 million gallons of fuel and moved nearly 34,000 tons of cargo and 36,000 passengers. Airmen worked seamlessly to earn the award, which honors the skill and expertise to perform their mission of airlifting and refueling while in flight around the globe.
