Today in Sacramento: Here’s what you need to know for Thursday

Achievement gap topic in Davis

The Davis Joint Unified School District board will hear a presentation on closing the achievement gap at the elementary school level, in which low-income minority students perform worse than their peers. Among the solutions are extended day programs, English learner services, a summer reading program and the state preschool reading program, according to a staff document. The board meets in open session at 7 p.m., Community Chambers, 23 Russell Blvd., Davis.

Dog park proposed at park

The Sacramento City Unified School District board will consider a proposal allowing the city to create a small dog park on the existing baseball field at Sojourner Truth Park. The district must sign off because a 2007 agreement specifies that the park be used by students at the neighboring School of Engineering and Sciences for physical education activities. The board meets in open session starting at 6:30 p.m., Serna Center, 5735 47th Ave., Sacramento.

Central kitchen facility supported

The Sacramento Food Policy Council is convening an event before the Sacramento City Unified school board meeting to support a central kitchen facility that has been proposed for the district. The group wants the district to build the kitchen using Measure R bond funds and will advocate for the project at the board meeting. The group is holding its event at 6 p.m., Serna Center, 5735 47th Ave., Sacramento.
